TBCT statement on the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine

The members of the Transforming Breast Cancer Together (TBCT) initiative express their deepest concern about the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine and neighboring countries. Our thoughts are with all those affected, especially the most vulnerable in society who are suffering as a result of the conflict. Amongst others, the impact of this crisis on healthcare system cannot be overlooked. Particularly people living with chronic diseases or those undergoing cancer treatment need to be guaranteed continuous access to treatment and care.

It is of utmost importance that continuity of care and treatment for patients is safeguarded in Ukraine, and that neighboring countries, with EU support through for example the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, prepare with adequate supplies and resources to welcome those who have been displaced and need medical care. Furthermore, the supply of treatments, pharmaceutical ingredients and diagnostics needs to continue be ensured. TBCT members reiterate their unwavering commitment to meeting the health needs and standards of thousands of patients and we are exploring ways to guarantee that treatments, diagnostics and care reach all those in need.

Finally, we stress that healthcare facilities, personnel and civilians should never be military targets in any war. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this terrible situation and those working and receiving treatment in facilities that are under attack in Ukraine.
