Helping patients and their families during, before and after breast cancer is the inspiration and the driving force of the “Transforming Breast Cancer Together” initiative. Patient empowerment and patient needs are at the centre of all the various activities implemented by the group. As such, the Transforming Breast Cancer Together Initiative continues to advocate for the rights and needs of patients, by maintaining breast cancer high on the EU policymaking agenda, with the ultimate objective of improving breast cancer patients’ outcomes throughout the breast cancer pathway.
The members of the Transforming Breast Cancer Together (TBCT) initiative express their deepest concern about the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine and neighboring countries. Our thoughts are with all those affected, especially the most vulnerable in society who are suffering as a result of the conflict. Amongst others, the impact of this crisis on healthcare system cannot be overlooked. Particularly people living with chronic diseases or those undergoing cancer treatment need to be guaranteed continuous access to treatment and care.
As we mark this International Women’s Day, our first thoughts are with everyone in Ukraine. In particular, we are deeply concerned for those who are undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and our immediate priority is to ensure that all breast cancer patients continue to get access to the care they need. This International Women’s Day, we recognise not only the incredible women who are facing the daily realities of breast cancer, but also the need to educate and inform all women of the signs of breast cancer, so they can live their lives to the fullest.
One in two people will hear the words ‘You have cancer’ at some point in their life. Although the outlook and quality of life for breast cancer patients has improved significantly in recent years, a lot more work remains to be done to ensure that breast cancer is screened, diagnosed and treated at an early stage and those living with or after breast cancer can successfully manage work, return to work, or find work during or after treatment.
Long-term survival rates for breast cancer are improving. This is good news for World Cancer Day, held every 4th of February, as the global initiative to reimagine a world where millions of cancer deaths are prevented and access to life-saving cancer treatment and care is available to all – no matter who you are or where you live. Thanks to advances in early diagnosis, more effective treatments and improvements in quality of care, more people than ever are transitioning from breast cancer patient to a person who had or lives with breast cancer.
TBCT initiative spear-headed a joint letter calling on policymakers to ensure that the European Parliament’s Special Committee on Beating Cancer (BECA) report and the European Commission’s Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan reflect the special attention metastatic or advanced cancer deserves. TBCT urges policymakers to consider the multitude of specific needs of metastatic or advanced cancer patients and make sure that no patient is left behind.
On 15 November 2021, the Transforming Breast Cancer Together (TBCT) initiative, acknowledging the fragmented approach to breast cancer care among European Member States, dedicated an event to identify the disparities, underpin their consequences and debate solutions to provide all EU citizens with the quality and support they require and deserve throughout their cancer journeys.
